Democracy Restored issued a statement following the recent coverage by The Guardian of President Donald Trump’s efforts to downsize the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

In the latest instance of legacy media manipulation, the article claims that “ripped-off Americans will have ‘nowhere to turn’ if the CFPB is undone” — a grandiose and false statement that completely ignores the CFPB’s own checkered past.

The CFPB has been one of the most powerful, yet least accountable agencies in Washington. Created under Dodd-Frank in 2010, it was designed to operate outside the reach of voters and elected officials, funded not by Congress, but directly from the Federal Reserve. This structure has allowed the CFPB to evade the normal budgetary oversight that ensures other government agencies answer to the American people.

Quote from Democracy Restored Director Houston Keene:

“In yet another movement of the Symphony of Manufactured Sympathy, the unelected bureaucrats are warning of impending doom and gloom if they don’t get to keep their government bloat jobs. Claiming that ripped-off Americans will have ‘nowhere to turn’ if one of several federal agencies protecting American consumers closes is not only disingenuous, it’s ignorant of CFPB’s litany of abuses against consumers and businesses. Still, the legacy media will tune their strings and blast their horns to get a modicum of emotion from already disinterested readers.”
