A DOJ report alleges criminal and ethical violations by federal prosecutor Sanjay Patel.
When a prosecutor eschews his oath and acts as an ideological zealot, he is not serving the country or the rule of law he has sworn to uphold. Even more, he has no business practicing law. That’s why government watchdog Democracy Restored has filed a bar complaint with New York’s Attorney Grievance Committee for the Third Judicial Department seeking an investigation into Sanjay Patel’s conduct, which does not meet the standards of the New York State Bar.
A recent U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) report on government weaponization, in agreeance with the conclusions of separate a House Judiciary Committee investigation, alleged that Patel used the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act and coordinated with pro-abortion groups to monitor and target anti-abortion activists while serving as Director of the Biden DOJ’s National Task Force on Violence Against Reproductive Health Care Providers.
The FACE Act protects access to abortion clinics, pro-life crisis pregnancy centers, and houses of worship. However, the DOJ report states that taskforce “attorneys questioned whether to provide pregnancy resource centers with the same resources as abortion clinics.” The report also found the Biden DOJ pursued significantly harsher sentences for peaceful pro-life defendants than violent pro-abortion defendants.
The report highlights several examples of pro-life activists who were aggressively monitored, in some cases arrested by SWAT teams, and then prosecuted, but whose convictions were later overturned. The report also alleges that the DOJ aggressively screened jury pools with an impermissible anti-Christian bias and withheld evidence from defense attorneys.
Meanwhile, Patel “was on texting terms with the National Abortion Federation’s (NAF) Security Team and regularly communicated with Planned Parenthood and the Feminist Majority Foundation” in the targeting of pro-life protesters. By contrast, the taskforce never spoke to pro-life organizations about the surge of violence and vandalism against churches and crisis pregnancy centers that occurred in the wake of the Dobbs ruling until September 2022, well after the decision was leaked and released.
Patel’s track record clearly demonstrates a deep bias against pro-life Americans and Christians, professional misconduct, and a disregard for the constitutional rights of U.S. citizens. Democracy Restored calls on the Attorney Grievance Committee to review his conduct and impose the full range of permissible sanctions, up to and including disbarment.
